DC Capacitor-Less Two-Terminal Unified Active Capacitor and Inductor

Flexible characteristics, tunable parameters, and improved power density are the desired attributes that have led to widespread research on active capacitors inductors (ACI) in conversion systems. However, two-terminal realisation of ACI is challenging due different trade-offs between density, device stress, reliability added components. Moreover, requirement handling second-harmonic ripple makes bulk electrolytic nearly indispensable ACIs. Thus, scope improvement becomes constrained. Hence, requiring minimum or no dc capacitance seen as an attractive technology recent literature. such solutions can mimic either inductive capacitive behaviour with a single converter unit, restricting their adaptability across applications. This limitation addressed this work proposed unified capacitor inductor (UACI), realised without any capacitor. It emulates variable inductance while offering smooth transition from one characteristic another. High effective impedance small susceptance at duty prevents undesirable current overshoot during transition. A laboratory-scale prototype fabricated, hardware verified up $\pm$ 450 VAR.
